While the Pentagon sanitizes in its commemoration of the Vietnam war in this the 50th anniversary of the onset of combat (and bombing), Lembcke seems to be overreaching to sanitize the image of the extremist protesters who abused the troops on their return. The idea of an irate mob attacking groups of soldiers at the airport, with no reaction from the victims, is completely absurd to anyone who has ever been at a protest or understands how the police react in those types of situations. Not one article or police report of these supposed incidents at the time. (less)
