It drives me crazy when authors write suspense/mystery novels and don't address all the loose ends, for lack of a better term

Where is Faith from? Unless I missed something, she grew up outside of Chicago, IL, USA. So why are all of her references British? She even uses pounds instead of dollars, Mum instead of Mom and the list goes on. I like British slang, but just trying to figure out if it was explained.
