The story does stack its deck pretty harshly against the antagonist (Vassily) by making out his is apathetic and profit-focused. But his final act for his workman (Nikita) is one of pure selflessness and acknowledging this, Vassily finally releases the folly of his whole life and dies peacefully. (less)
