I would say anywhere from ten to adult depending on reading level.

It's not written at a middle grade reading level, but an advanced middle-grade reader could read it. There are some descriptions of fantasy violence, discussion of themes of death and illness, and romance. But there is nothing sexual in any of the three books in the trilogy.

I read these for the first time when I was in the 8th grade (I was either 12 or 13), but could have read them younger and enjoyed them. They were my favourite books around that age and they definitely hold up over time. I still reread them every couple of years.

Not all YA has to be the super gritty stuff we've started to see now days, and not all YA has to feature sex scenes (implicit or explicit) to be exciting to teens. I would recommend these books to anyone for whom a YA book would be accessible in terms of reading-level.(less)
