Why do women's names alternate between using their mother's maiden name and their surname? For example Natasha Frolenko is sometimes referred to as Natalya(?!) Sergeyevna. Sofia Petrovna is sometimes Sofia Lipatova (her real full name is Sofia Petrovna Lipatova). Her husband is Fyodor Ivanovich. Why isn't she Sofia Lipatova Ivanovich? Sofia's son is Nikolai "Kolya" Lipatova, not Nikolai Ivanovich?
