There is frank discussion of sex and sexuality, unintended and nonconsensual pregnancy, elective abortion, and rape. Big issues, that many parents might wish to shield young readers from.

These issues are handled seriously, and for the most part in a manner that gibes with twenty-first century progressive values, and I wouldn't stop an adolescent from reading it but would make myself available to discuss issues it raises in an adult manner. Others may well feel differently.

Ultimately, to determine if it is appropriate by your standards, you really would have to read it yourself. (less)
