The slightly longer answer is that the two books are companions more than a sequal.
"The Six-Day Hero" is entirely from Motti's point of view. He is twelve years old and Beni is 6 years old. "Beni's War" takes place six years later when Beni is twelve and is told totally from Beni's point of view.
While I think the two books complete each other nicely, each one stands independently of the other.
