I was 10 and in grade 6 when I read these books. Unless a child has been sheltered from life, if they like adventures, they'll likely love the book.

The "sex" mentioned below is not a deterrent and there are absolutely no details. They didn't make me "grow up" earlier, however they did influence my strong mentality of fighting for the things I want.
I've loved them so much that I've re-read them as an adult and I can't wait to, eventually, have my kid read them. :) Only as an adult had I realized how these books were amazing for creating such a strong female character lead. (less)

Not Adult books but well worth reading are John Flanagan's "Ranger's Apprentice" starting with "The Ruins of Gorlan"... thru to several spin-off series including the "Brotherband" series.
