It's about the people of a small town in Kansas, in the aftermath of a limited nuclear attack on 23 major cities in the contiguous United States. They are totally cut off, and struggle to produce electricity, heat, food, shelter and medical care, and to deal with refugees. I thought it was a great mix of interesting characters and ideas, very well written. I recommend it.(less)

It also mentions how many of those who sit in their glass houses, such as professors and other liberal types, will be lost because they aren't prepared for a society that doesn't give them everything. But besides those two points, the book is NOT politically leaning one way or the other.

So, if you don't think the USA is one of the greatest and don't like patriotism, then perhaps this particular post-apocalyptic book isn't for you. But you should probably find a book that does challenge you to look at yourself and our society and what *might* happen if global and national communications go down and stuff stopped working.(less)

This is the BEST, most engrossing book I've read in a long time. I don't understand the nitpickers who complain about little things and criticize the writer! I guess those who can't write become critics. Too bad, they got so busy complaining they missed reading a truly awesome book!
