I’m hoping someone can clear up my confusion about the English aristocracy. The main character in this story is Viscount Langton. I always thought that a viscount was the son of an earl and would inherit the title of Earl upon his father’s death. Here, the father has been dead for many years, but Jonas is still a viscount. What am I missing?

So as I understand it, peers (Duke, Marquess, Earl, Viscount, Baron) often hold other lesser ranked titles( But not Barons since they are already at the bottom of the food chain.)

Most Earls hold a viscount title, which their heir may use as a courtesy title, but Viscount can also be an independent title. So you may be a Viscount with no claim to an Earldom.
