The description of this book sounds like it is coming from an environmental background not a climate change background. Is this book about the affects of climate change or the affects of poor environmental policies?

Although it does describe in vivid detail HOW they survive and interact with their environment. But there's no great lesson at the end (at least in my opinion) about treating the Earth better. (less)

I just discovered the title. Is it overall heavy? As an environmentalist, I am intrigued by the author using climate change as the back bone. However, I'm dismayed that it might be really heavy. Not that the subject isn't- was hoping it was more "inviting" (as in this is why we need to change our ways). I have added it to my list to read...

If you love the Eart…moreIt is heavy in the way that a book about the destruction of our wild spaces and the need to protect this one last space is heavy. If you love the Earth and feel acute pain over what we are losing, that is the subtext of this novel. I did not, however, find it too heavy to read. The story focuses on the people who are trying to make it in the New Wilderness and is very much driven by the stories and interactions of the people, particularly one mother and child. I encourage you to read it!(less)

I agree with the reviews that expected more from this book, but I began the book with the question: How could these folks possibly survive in this wilderness? At the end I asked: How could these folks possibly survive without this wilderness? Despite all the criticisms, a book that can alter my central thought about a concept is an accomplishment and well worth my time. What do others think? Did you feel similarly?
