One such place was Ternopol (or Tarnopol), a village in Ukraine. Three successive German commanders requested permission to retreat and were denied. The defending German soldiers eventually suffered nearly 100% casualties.

Except for the lucky Soldier X who began his fantastically incredible wanderings as an unlikely survivor.(less)
