(When I was 14, on my first read, I didn't have a clue what happened.) Charles, an isolated teenager without a father, goes to Macleod for tutoring and ends up feeling genuine affection for him, which at times feels sexual. The story seemed neither perverted nor scandalous to me.

The movie removed any and all sexual ambiguity; that's why you don't remember it.(less)
