Serre takes the cohomological approach to local class field theory, but this is not the only approach. For example Iwasawa's book Local Class Field theory does it via formal groups, not using cohomological machinery.

For group cohomology in particular, I read parts of books by Brown, Weibel and Rotman. (less)
