This book NEVER could function as he wished, as a true "you can begin here and the story is still the same" kind of book. The Circle Trilogy was written close together and as the beginning of the entire Books of History chronicles/series. That's why the first three are so well-written, tightly plotted, and thematically similar (as well as simple, relatively, compared to the later BoH series books).

But Green comes as the capstone of not just the Circle series, but the entire BoH chronicles. Spoilers will be below, so to quickly summarize: I strongly suggest looking up the publication order of the Books of History chronicles/series and reading them in that order.

The evolution of the author's thoughts and the "lore" of the universe he created is best understood in the order he wrote them. Showdown wasn't nearly as rich for me until I read the Circle trilogy; while some of the fringe books like Immanuel's Veins and House were okay on their own, they get deeper and richer when read after some of what came before, etc. And Green is definitely best understood as the culmination of all these books together.

SPOILERS: Characters like Billy are introduced in the Paradise trilogy (Showdown, Saint, Sinner); the idea of the ability to travel between dimensions using the Books comes from the Lost Books series, as does the idea of Teeleh's queens and the idea of human/shataiki hybrids; etc. (less)
