The book certainly touches on debauches of many kinds: drunkenness, gambling, womanizing, but much of it isn't explicit. At least the womanizing isn't, much of that is referred to more obliquely. There is also rather a lot of swearing, but again, it's not always completely obvious. Generally, they've left out a bunch of letters so you're not always sure what the swear word was, just that it was one. Of course, some like "G-d d--n" are pretty easy to figure out. In his introduction, Smollett tells why he thought the "course language" was appropriately included. (less)
