Instead of equipping characters with the sort of hat and vest "everybody wore" in the West of previous movies and novels, creators of both of these sub-genres took the trouble to research costumes, guns, etc. that might actually have been present in the time and setting. I think you could find your way cross county from Arizona to Los Angeles by following the journey described in Mojave Crossing, though it's set well over 100 years ago. The plots of L'Amour's books are usually believable to this student of actual Western history. Far easier to read than Zane Grey. (less)
