The philosophy is not just what people talk about (as in Iris Murdoch etc.) but in what the characters think and do. Barth obviously knew Ayer's Language, Truth and Logic and was familiar with British linguistic philosophy when it seeded into America in the 1950s; the difference is that he found it amusing too.(less)
