Hi. I have a Readers Digest (Selection Edition remember those?) version of the book which a friend gave me and I was planning on reading it. But I realized the book is missing more than 300 pages in this compressed version. Should I read it or wait to read the unabridged version?

I enjoy reading cozy mysteries like Ann Cleaves' Vera and Shetland series, and Louise Penny's Three Pines series. This is the first Val McDermid book I've read...great writing but I didn't like the gruesome details. Are all of Ms. McDermid's books so gory?
