Do I need to read any previous books by John le Carré to understand this one?

On the whole it's kind of a coda to the Karla trilogy and refers to various events and characters from that, so while the stories stand on their own, the whole thing would probably make a lot more sense having read at least Tinker Tailor and Smiley's People. I would recommend those over this one anyway.(less)

I find it hard to believe that Hansen was left alive in the jungle. Is there any basis of fact to this story? As I understand things as they were, to be captured in South East Asia was a death sentence. Pete A
