When I was writing ALL HE KNEW, my friend Willy Conley, a Deaf author, read and advised me about the story. He was both enthusiastic and helpful, and the story became stronger and deeper with his input.

After the book was published, Willy arranged an exchange with another friend of his: I sent ALL HE KNEW to Edna Edith Sayers, and she sent her book OUTCASTS AND ANGELS: THE NEW ANTHOLOGY OF DEAF CHARACTERS IN LITERATURE to me. She inscribed it for me as "a fan of Henry." That means a great deal to me, as one thing her anthology demonstrates, and she describes, are all the ways a hearing author can go wrong in creating deaf/Deaf characters. I was glad to know that, with Willy's help, I had avoided most of them.
