I just finished the book. Although I loved it, I didn't understand the significance of the rat. Can someone explain me? I exactly did not get the climax. Was the rat some sort of cursed human being? Somehow it's depth is beyond my level of understanding.

Her identifying as a rat seemed like pure survival strategy and coping mechanism. Her actions at the end provide ironic closure to several threads of the story. (less)
