The screenplay was jointly written by both Lee and Price. I'm about halfway through the book, and the movie casting, IMO, was excellent.

But the book is very long and follows both the cops and drug dealers equally, yet the movie mostly follows the main drug dealer, because of time constraints.

The movie retains the well researched realism of the book, where you get to know the lingo, the daily routine, and the thoughts of both cops and drug dealers.
