I listened to the novel on BBC and missed the moment when Captain Kirke was introduced when he turned up as Magdalene's great love. Apparently he saw her only once. Can anybody fill me in? Thanks

Joanne He saw her once in passing, but he could not stop thinking about her...and then he saw her again... He was taken with her, but she barely noticed him.

If I've read 225 pages and have only enjoyed parts of it (namely those not following Magdalen), should I quit reading? Does the rest of the book continue in a similar vein? Thank you!
