I can't figure out when this is supposed to take place. So far they've mentioned the house being wired for electricity, and one of the characters has a Rolling Stones record that came out in 1965, but until then I was guessing the 1980s. Any better hints that have just gone over my head?

I can't cite the page numbers, but I did come to that conclusion early on in the book. The architecture of the new police station, the clothes, the music, and some of the dialogue sets it (for me anyway) in about 1987-88. If you want an exact year, you can look up which years May 27 fell on Saturday. (less)
