The book is very evocative of Florida. The descriptions of Florida and Gainesville are beautiful. I enjoyed the stories and didn't find the book depressing, though some plot points can be weighted emotionally. (less)

I don't read the end of For the Love of God... that way. I don't think Manfred is about to kill anyone. I read the part about the pills as Manfred giving up on life. But he does make a statement that causes a realization to dawn about what is actually going on in the relationships between the characters. The realization of infidelity is just coming to light, and there's a sense of foreboding because a reckoning is about to happen, and the story ends right before it does.
As for Salvador, it's possible. I didn't think that the first time I read it, but upon reading the end again just now, I suppose he could be. I think it's left up to the reader.(less)

Vegetarianism and veganism are themes, so it's obvious that many characters harbor reluctance to cause animals, especially animals "with faces," pain or harm. (less)
