Could this be read as a stand alone book of short stories, or do you have to have read the Essex Witch Museum Mystery series to get it?

George Most emphatically it can. There's only one entry set at the museum, and another that references Adder's Fork, its location.

The former, "Christmas Ever at the Witch Museum", has a reference to the museum's "resident protester", which is left opaque (and is not worth explaining here) but has no impact on the story. The latter, "She Saw Three Ships", is set in a vacation spot for someone who's from Adder's Fork.(less)
