How historically accurate is this book; does she cite original sources or is this along the lines of Curtis Sittenfeld's books that use real people and events as the basis for an entirely fictional reimagining? Alice Southworth was my great great etc. grandmother so although I am looking forward to reading it I am curious as to whether it is more history or fiction.

In her afterword Nesbit describes this process, including the titles of her sources both primary and secondary. She also mentions discussions with several scholars currently recognized for their own research on this time period and place. Characters include known historical figures such as William Bradford, Bradford's first wife Mary, Myles Standish, and others who arrived on the Mayflower or who were living elsewhere in the area. Attention has also been paid to studying the indigenous people living near the colony as well. This all said, it is historical fiction, so liberties are taken with what the author imagines to have been possible based on her research.(less)
