Reading The Paths Between Worlds and I gotta say, come on, why no black characters? I'm accustomed to not seeing a lot of minority representation in science fiction but when an alien force gathers a group of people from seemly all over the earth and many from North America and none of them are black, what does that say about the author?

Regarding this, from the synopsis: "[...] a mystery that places the fate of humanity’s future firmly in her hands." How strong is the "fate of the future" concept in this? I'm generally turned off from books when they drive this type of concept home to the reader, but I'm very interested in the rest of the description. Thanks!
