Long, complete with anecdotes, battle details, draft issues, etc, etc, etc Mr. Foote is probably the most knowledgeable author I have read on the subject. J. Macpherson's "Battle Cry Freedom" is a great single volume read for topical understanding. Indeed the South had better generals and soldiers, just no industry outside of cotton and tobacco. Capitalism beat chattel slavery. If you want to understand the US Civil War you have to read this.(less)

I'm enjoying reading Civil War Vol. 1; however, there's a problem beginning page 702. Evidently my copy was put together incorrectly. 8 pages from Vol 2, Sect 3, Chap 7, Riot and Resurgence, pgs 702-703,710-711,718-719,726-727) are there instead of the same 8 pages of Vol. 1. I checked Vol. 2 and the pages are the same in both books. I would like to have copies of these 8 pages from Vol 1 - any ideas?
