Long, complete with anecdotes, battle details, draft issues, etc, etc, etc Mr. Foote is probably the most knowledgeable author I have read on the subject. J. Macpherson's "Battle Cry Freedom" is a great single volume read for topical understanding. Indeed the South had better generals and soldiers, just no industry outside of cotton and tobacco. Capitalism beat chattel slavery. If you want to understand the US Civil War you have to read this.(less)
