I get through at least three books a week, and have read all of Le Carré's previous books at least twice, and in my opinion this was one of his very best. It was the sort of book that leaves you bereft when you get to the end, and made me want to go straight back to the start and read it again. It might be because I do all of my reading via audio books nowadays, and think that Donald Trump is despicable, Brexit a mess, and that I am also a strong atheist. By all means go back and read some or all of his other books, but you don't need to, and you most certainly should not deny yourself the pleasure of this book.(less)

Susan yes. I think he was trying to say that a man who has such an idealistic view of his country can be so disappointed when his country doesn't live up to…moreyes. I think he was trying to say that a man who has such an idealistic view of his country can be so disappointed when his country doesn't live up to his expectations can decide that he needs to do something that he believes is in his country's best interests in order to set the country back on the "right track". For example, the assassination of a political leader would be a betrayal of the country and the government, while others who believe that the leader is taking the government on the wrong direction would view the assassination as necessary for the idealistic vision. We never discover what code name Jericho is, but the person that read a brief section of it knew he needed to do something to stop it because his country would never do such a thing.(less)
