I thought I asked this but I don't see it. How do you listen to radio in a house that doesn't have electricity? On page 28 Dorothy turns the radio on and two paragraphs later mentions the house not even being wired for electricity.Now we have batteries but in 1934 I'm not sure that was true.

I have just started the book. On page 29 Ruth’s mother has turned on the radio. Two paragraphs down Ruth’s mother comments that Ruth’s house isn’t wired for electricity. So, how did the radio play? I know today we have batteries but in 1934 would families have typically played radios on battery power?
