The two main characters are two sisters, rather than each other's love interests, and so it's more about familial relationships, rather than romantic ones. I did like Emergency Contact, but I think Yolk is a better book and more mature, so it's definitely worth the read - even if you didn't like Emergency Contact. In terms of the teen speak and pop culture references, I can't remember what they were like in Emergency Contact, but I don't think this is an issue in Yolk.(less)

Ultimately, I would say it’s not too depressing, the book focuses far more on healing in both mentality and family.(less)
