The author's Anishinabe background and upbringing is crucial in her telling the story from the main character's perspective, but it isn't necessarily pertinent in the actual mystery of the book (especially in a reader's understanding of the mystery). I think her identity is more important in the first book due to the various settings and characters.

I recommend you read the book and you will understand what I mean. If you want to learn even more of the author's identity and perspective, start with Murder on the Red River(less)
