I thought the movie was as good as the book, not many like that but I loved them both and Mitchum in the first and DeNiro in the second with Mitchum playing the investigator role. Anybody else see it like that?

I saw the 1962 movie years ago. I have just read the book. It now now seems to me that Mitchum was quite wrong for the part of the villain. I then thought that De Niro would be just right. Best solution? De Niro's physique and Mitchum's slyness. I have just discovered that in a 1991 re-make, De Niro was indeed chosen!
