O…moreActually, I think his self-doubt and anxiety make Monk more human, more real. It shows that he's not as self-confident as he appears on the outside. Obviously, in the 1860s we didn't have therapists like we do now so he really didn't have a way to work through his emotions.

I love Perry's characters. They are well drawn and interesting. She does an amazing job of describing their motives. Yes, sometimes she repeats herself. But overall, I appreciate the characters compared to other mystery novels I read.

Finally, her plots are different to me. She deals with tough topics such as the Opium Wars, child abuse and moral dilemmas. Far more interesting than, say, James Patterson.(less)
