He talks the whole way through as if he has no clue what he's doing and the animals just keep somehow ending up on his property, and that seems to have really hit a raw nerve with a lot of readers.

For me, it wasn't a problem, because he talks about constant visits to the vet, constant care issues for the different animals, all their different preferences, all their names... reading between the lines, I got the feeling that he was actually much more alert than he was letting on, but that he was playing it up for the self-deprecating humor. I thought it was very funny, and of course it was sad when one of the animals died or was injured, but people who own animals know that they can get injured, even when they are well cared for. I don't know if this helps, but that was my take.(less)
