But I also make it a point to discuss the overt racism, the lack of true-to-life information (about wolves and Natives), and the inverse parallel structure between this book and "The Call of the Wild." It does get a bit graphic with the dog fights, but my students haven't seemed to mind that. I will agree that it's not technically a YA novel - there's nothing in the book to make it fall under that category - but it is appropriate to read at the middle-high school level, as long as the issues listed above are not ignored.(less)

But it's super graphic, which is why there's been yet to be a decent movie remake! Movies like Disney or whoever made the 2018 animated movie all pander to schoolkids, which removes all the components that made the book so gripping. Such a shame. White Fang is NOT a schoolkid book. Jack London never meant for it to be read by school kids. It's an adult book with adult themes/writing style.

It's about an upper midcontent (75%) wolfdog. His mother was 50% wolf, father pure wolf. I found the entire book captivating and even bought it! My original copy is super worn out. To this day it's one of my fave books ever. White Fang stands alone as a true classic in my collection of fave books. It's not for everyone, but for those that love wolves and nature (book goes into great detail about the natural world), it's top tier! (less)
