It's been many, many years since I read this book. I seem to remember a character in it who, whenever he relocated to a new place, immediately set about to orient himself globally, checking to see what other places were at the same lattitude, then the same longitude, in an attempt to ground himself with respect to his new location. Was it this book? What character? What chapter, if you know?
