Possible Spoiler: Have read the first two books in the series. Did not like the second so much. It really bothered me when one of the lead characters was being targeted again to scare them away. Does that keep happening in future books in the series? Also is the angst about the relationship between the two characters going to be a big part of future books. Thanks.

Is it always the bones of a dead child that activate the story? Was the case in The Crossing Places, her first book as well. I think I am very grouchy right now as I wanted to read a book with this protagonist but won't read yet another story featuring dead children, or abused, assaulted etc...

Ana In her books 3 - 6 there are no dead children. I have not read the rest.

Yes, the former maid is the child's mother. Also in Chapter 35, it says, "Bernadette's mother was not at the funeral....." Sister Immaculata had died during the night.(less)
