Why use a .45 caliper Automatic to shoot the cops?

This is a reading order question. I want to check out the 87th Precinct series, in part because Stephen King gave them (and the fox/pig-face concept) an intriguing shout out in one of his recent books and I liked the Bosch series as well as other procedurals. Clearly, I've been missing out. But, is it best to start with this first entry from nearly seven decades ago or start elsewhere in the series?

Hello all you 87th fans. I have read almost all of them over the years numerous times but I have a nagging memory. I am convinced that ONE of these wonderful works has two characters: a small chubby woman & her beloved boyfriend who is tall and thin -she calls him Brother as they pretend to be religious but they are killers. Not Cop Hater but don't know if its 87th or not. Anyone know which 87th? Thank you sincerely
