The first book mostly takes place in the 20th C. and this book, I believe, is in the 19th ... in any case, it predates the second book, some of whose characters are actually descendants of the characters here. Knowing the first book enriches the second in a kind of general way, but there is nothing specific about that book that you need to know in order to understand and appreciate this one.(less)
