Kids are exposed to way worse, and this graphic novel teaches such an important part of history many students do not learn about until college, if at all. Like Maus, this book doesn't shy away from the atrocities committed during WW2. It also celebrates the resilience of the human spirit.

Students need to hear and read accurate accounts and historical materials about the past, and Grass can help students understand how the Japanese Occupation still affects relations in East and South East Asia today.(less)
