Does anyone know why the dinner with Wally inspired her to leave her marriage almost immediately? I kept waiting for the connection to become apparent but it never did, as far as I could tell.

Regarding the face on the hardcover edition: is it supposed to be Madeleine or the lady in the lake? Since the woman appears to be white, I'm thinking Madeleine but that seems an odd choice when the title suggests differently.

The cover may be implying that Cleo is a reflection of Madeline and vice versa. Both are willing to take chances to get what they think that they want, albeit with different outcomes. At the dinner at the beginning, there is much talk of maintaining a kosher kitchen and at the same time it talks of her special beef casserole with and cream of mushroom soup. Isn't this mixing meat and dairy and therefore not kosher? I found this odd.

Did anyone else catch the references to "Marjorie Morningstar" (don't know how to underline here) by Herman Wouk? In this book Madeline's maiden name is Morgenstern as is Marjorie's. Marjorie marries a Milton Schwartz and has a brother Seth. An old beau of Marjorie's is Wally Wronken, and a Wally Wright shows up as an old admirer of Madeline's. I have to believe this was deliberate, but I fail to see the parallel?
