I feel like I should have sussed this out myself, and that my college-age self would be laughing at me, but what is the significance of Eliza's dialogue being in italics except near the end, when it's in regular quotes?

While the POV is somewhat omniscient throughout, it does get attached to different characters in different parts of the book, and when it's Eliza, her dialogue is not in italics. When her dialogue is in italics, she's being presented through someone else's imagination or memory.(less)
