I read Childhoods end when I was a young adult and loved it . I am planning on reading it again. I am wondering if you all think that it would qualify as a good read aloud book? I am a dorm parent for grades 7,8 and 9 at a boarding school. now that the weather is getting cozier I am going to start reading for 20-30 min before lights out. Any thoughts? suggestions?

Not that much suspense in it or anything. and there are some long slow marts in the book about how ideal civilisations might look like, which i think grades 7/8 wont really like that much.
I could recomand HG wells war of the worlds. A great book to read out loud for that group :D(less)

What does "Syfy TV Tie-in" mean? Is this the full book, as Arthur C Clarke intended it? I hope it isn't some kind of cropped up TV-adapted version...

Fantastically creative and thought-provoking. But the ending was so desolate and disturbing for me that is took away from the pleasure of the rest of the book. Did anyone else feel like this?

Overall though, the concepts were very interesting. I would say it was the best except for book #4 in the Rama series. That was way above this one in many ways. Mostly the concepts, and the natural feeling, which is much different that most science fiction.(less)

According to Wikipedia, in 1990 Clarke produced a new edition of the novel, with an amended first chapter. It mentions that some editions have both versions of the chapter. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Childhood%27s_End#Publication I intend to re-read it soon and would like to read both versions; so can anyone tell me of an edition that has both versions?
