After getting very drunk, Roger confronts Mr. Thorne and hits him (with his walking stick, I think) and the man dies after falling to the pavement. This is how Roger Scatcherd ends up in prison for manslaughter.(less)

Dorothy Willis Dr. Thorne is a second cousin of Mr. Thorne of Ullathorne. It says so in Chapter 2.
