Longer answer: I wrote this as "upper" YA, and it definitely shows...this would be too dark/mature for early middle schoolers. For late middle schoolers (14+), it would really be a case-by-case basis. It deals with a lot of appropriate themes (social pressures, family, friendship, religion, identity), but it also deals with some brutal subjects, such as parental abuse.
