I'm the author, but I speak without bias in saying that I think I would have found this book helpful if I had read it during my medical challenges. It shows, ultimately, that amazing outcomes can happen even in the most dire circumstances. It portrays the main character (me!) as being strong at times and weak at others, loving at moments and frustrated and boiling mad at others, and alternately grasping at hope and utterly rejecting it. In other words, it shows the range of emotions that can come with serious illness and a fight for life. It shows a human being. I think that seeing parts of ourselves in others makes us feel less lonely—and serious illness can be very lonely indeed. Also, the uplifting power of friendship is a steady constant through this book, straight to the end where it works a downright miracle. Happy ending that surely did not seem likely when the book began. So, all in all, I would say that the book is not a sugar sweet fable that uplifts with false optimism and forced lightness. Rather, it is real as real can be - and there is beauty and comfort in recognizing what IS - even if it's a terribly tough reality - and then seeing the other side of the sometimes greuling effort to stay in the game and get well. BEST OF LUCK TO YOUR NEIGHBOR!(less)
