The Name of the book is The Forgotten Door because the boy (Jon) falls through a "door" through space that his people forgot about when they first colonized his planet and he has to find his way back to that door from the other side. It is not a strong connection but the connection is there.(less)

The main subject is people reacting to difference with fear that becomes a kind of mob mentality and there will always be a few who do not get caught in the illogicness of it, but they usually are the ones who end up making the sacrifices. IMO
